Hall Ranch Mountain Unicycle Trail Description (~9 miles; hard & fast 2.25 hours):
Park at Hall Ranch, about 1.5 miles up Hwy 7 from Lyons, Colorado. This is both a great cardio-workout and technical trials trail [come back next time just to do the trials]; 99% rideable if you're in shape, this is the best all-around trail I've done in Colorado because it doesn't involve long uphill pushes [which are great because they lead to wild steep downhills]. Lots of mountain bikers and runners here, too. The views are nice and total elevation gain is 1000+ feet, beginning at about 5400 ft.
* Ride the Bitterbrush Trail, breathing hard on the moderate uphill, but generally he smooth trail for about 1 mile where the trail turns to 1/4 - 1/2 mile of granite boulders and strenuous uphill trials. This is obviously going to be incredible downhill, but most will also be rideable in small trials segments. Note that there are many opportunities to do granite trials just on the side of the trail here, too!
* Head down to a small saddle passing by the other access trail from Apple Valley Road - Hwy 36 side, and do the fast easy-trail for 2 miles.
* Begin the 2.5 mile Nelson Loop Trail here. I recommend going counter-clockwise [right turn here] because the the trail is easy/moderate uphill to the top and then fun moderate downhill to complete the loop. This will give you the fun downhill and the manageable up (mountain bikers go the other way around).
* Head back 2 miles to the saddle on generally fast easy downhill, with a couple of 100 foot sections of more strenuous uphill to the saddle.
* Now pull it in and concentrate to bounce down the awesome granite section. You'll get liminal at this point. Also a good time to put on your arm-armor if you have it (wish I'd brought mine).
* Finish out the final 1.5 miles back to the parking lot and don't forget to look at the views.
The mountain bikers I talked to said you have to go to Moab to get as similarly good a section of granite (and Moab has 9.9 miles of "slickrock", they say!!).
