Elk Ridge Muni Course Description:
Elk Ridge is composed mainly of two meadows situated on the east ridge
above Hwy 36, about 5 miles from Estes Park.
Go up Hell Canyon Road and park at the gate about 2 1/2 miles in.
A brief 1/2 mile moderate uphill leads to the high point of the
northernmost of the two meadows, each of which looks like about a square
mile in area. Trials opportunities abound here.
Follow the trail down to the disappearing two-track and go left (right goes
1/4 mile to the Good Ranch).
Ride 1/2 mile and then down a slightly rocky section to get to the
southernmost meadow.
Ride gently downhill 1/2 mile end, some more trials opportunities.
Without the kids there are two variations, both of which can be done, but
#2 not so interesting:
Variation 1: Continue up the rocky trail to climb the mountain and do a 2
mile loop, the rocky return descent will be worth it. (Trail will continue
at least 1 mile along the ridge surmounting large boulders and challenging
singletrack, before descending 1-2 miles to a ranch, but this is private
property). Lots more trials up on the top of the mountain.
Variation 2: Turn left at the small exposed flat granite area and head
downhill for 1/2 mile. Parallel the fence 50 feet from the gate below to a
sharp down, hop a small creek, and up 20 feet to the road just about where
the gate for the ranch marks private property. Head 1 1/4 mile up the road
back to the car on narrow forest road, going through a gate before a small
parking area.
